RESPONSIBILITY
Students are responsible for fulfilling commitments, completing assignments on time and managing their own behaviour.
Help your child learn to plan ahead by asking questions such as, "What do you need to pack for school tomorrow?"
Have your child take out his/her agenda every night and review the day with you.
Encourage your child to be responsible for a household chore (e.g. making their bed).
Allow your child to be responsible for taking care of the family pet.
Encourage your child to be energy conscious and turn off lights and screens.
Help your child be responsible for what they eat (e.g. making healthy food choices).
ORGANIZATION
Students develop and follow a plan and process for completing work and achieving goals. Students complete tasks by identifying, gathering, evaluating and using information, technology, and resources.
Track your child's assignments and activities on a wall calendar. Children benefit from visual reminders.
Have your child organize their toys or their bedroom.
Help your child establish a bedtime routine.
Encourage your child to sort and organize their clean laundry, closet.
INDEPENDENT WORK
Students develop independence by following instructions, monitoring progress, assessing and revising plans. Class time is used effectively to complete tasks and meet goals with minimal supervision.
Help your child to set goals and work towards them, independently (e.g. if your child is interested in piano, encourage them to practice independently).
Involve your child in making age-appropriate decisions, such as healthy food choices for their lunches and picking out their own clothes.
Encourage your child to get him/herself ready for bed by following established routines independently.
When your child starts an activity, encourage them to see it through to completion.
COLLABORATION
Students share information and fulfill various roles within a group to achieve goals. The group works together to solve problems while respecting the ideas and opinions of the other group members.
Play interactive games to practice sharing and taking turns.
Register your child for team sports or clubs, where they will gain experience socializing and interacting with others.
Bake with your child, having them involved in the process.
Encourage family meetings to collaboratively make family decisions.
Plant a garden together.
Work together to plan for a special occasion.
INITIATIVE
Students seek new ideas and opportunities for learning. The student willingly takes risks and demonstrates a positive attitude while respecting the rights of self and others.
Promote your child’s interests and support them by providing them with related experiences such as a nature walk or a trip to the library.
Highlight and celebrate when your child takes initiative in your home, such as completing something without being asked.
Model responsible risk-taking behaviour and discuss the benefits of trying something new.
Encourage your child to stay positive when faced with disappointments.
SELF-REGULATION
Students set and monitor individual goals based on strengths, needs and interests. Appropriate learning opportunities are identified and the student perseveres to achieve these goals.
Encourage your child to set goals of personal interest. Help them to make a plan to achieve their goal such as earning/saving enough money to purchase a desired item.

Empower your child to resist peer pressure and make good choices.
Remind your child to ask for help when they need it.
